How Does Pure Garcinia Cambogia Extract Aid Weight Loss?

There has been a lot of interest in pure Garcinia Cambogia extract and its impact on weight management. This plant extract sourced from the fruit of Garcinia Cambogia (also commonly known as brindleberry or gambooge) consists of a compound called hydroxycitric acid (HCA).

Having been the subject of comprehensive research, HCA has been clinically verified to stimulate weight management. This compound helps the body eliminate excess fat through several processes, including blocking fat production, enhancing emotional wellbeing, and reducing appetite.

So let's look at the ways in which pure Garcinia Cambogia can assist with weight management:

1. Blocks Fat:

HCA suppresses the activity of citrate lyase. Citrate lyase is involved in fatty acid biosynthesis. Citrate lyase is the connection between metabolizing carbohydrates and producing fatty acids. When HCA is present in the body, rather than transforming excess sugar into fat, this energy is used to produce glycogen in the liver and muscles. This prevents the formation of fatty tissues.

By enhancing the availability of glycogen in the muscles, the body has more energy available to help muscle growth. As a result, HCA promotes the development of lean muscle mass. Furthermore, the formation of triglycerides and bad cholesterol (LDL) are reduced by blocking the activity of citrate lyase. This helps to lower the risk of atherosclerosis.

2. Enhanced Emotional Well-being:

There are a couple of ways in which HCA promotes emotional well-being.

First of all, this compound assists with stimulating the production of serotonin. This feel good neurotransmitter lessens depression, anxiety and other mood disorders, which is great news for emotional eaters who seek consolation in food when they are feeling low. When mood is improved, the inclination to binge on unhealthy food items is reduced.

The 2nd way in which HCA improves emotional well-being is by lowering the concentration of the 'stress' hormone cortisol. This hormone can build up with time and have a variety of harmful effects, which includes weight gain. High levels of cortisol support the build-up of visceral fat cells in the belly area.

Excessive cortisol levels also impede the insulin-blood glucose relationship. This decreases energy availability and stimulates the brain to communicate food cravings to gain more energy. By decreasing cortisol concentrations, you'll crave less food and begin to lose weight.

3. Appetite Suppressant:

While HCA decreases food cravings by reducing cortisol levels, it also helps to suppresse appetite due to increased levels of glycogen. Increased glycogen levels stimulate receptors in the liver, transmitting messages to the brain that you've eaten enough. This lowers the amount of calories needed to feel satisfied, bringing about healthy weight-loss.

4. Choosing A Supplement:

Undoubtedly taking pure Garcinia Cambogia Extract offers a number of health benefits. However, you should beware when choosing a Garcinia Cambogia supplement. Opt for a supplement that is highly concentrated in HCA; more than 50 % if possible, and a high quality product with no extra ingredients.

Finally, one of the most crucial factors in the effectiveness of pure Garcinia Cambogia Extract has been shown to be how it is taken. It should be taken on an empty stomach approximately 30 to 60 minutes before a meal and with a glass of water. This ensures the HCA has been adequately absorbed before food consumption and will ensure maximum weight-loss benefit.

Pure Garcinia Cambogia Extract has been shown to be highly effective for weight management, as well as contributing to the other health benefits already examined.

Baby Boomers and Weight Loss - The Skinny on Removing the Belly-Fat

You're an expert on dieting advice. You've heard it all. You've tried it all. It all works - for a while. That same 10 lb. keeps finding you. The problem is now the rules are changing. It's getting harder to get it off in the first place. What used to work doesn't. So what's a boomer supposed to do? Read on and get ready for weight removal.

You read right - removal. You were never trying to just lose it, right? There is a chance after all that anything you lose you may find again. Definitely, removal is the goal. You're going to reframe here first. The real goal is inches not weight. If your clothes fit better, you defy gravity better in key areas that currently are on a race to your socks, and you have more energy, but the scale has not moved, will you be OK with that? Most would.

The first six inches you're going to change are the hardest. I refer to the six inches between your ears. That's right, depending on your age, you've been listening to, reading, and thus thinking the wrong things about what to eat, how to exercise, and how to live if you want to be living in your best body.

It's not your fault. The system failed you. Now, though, it's your job to change your mindset so that you can feel and see results. Below you're going to read the major mistakes that make boomer babes make that result in stored fat in the belly. You'll read why it makes matters worse and what you can do about it. Be warned - weight loss isn't as hard as you think. It's just too easy to stay attached to your old habits.

1.) You are counting calories. You do it at the expense of quality in your diet. You will choose a salad over a chicken breast, an apple over a yogurt with chia seeds. You'll choose a meal replacement shake over a plate of stir-fry veggies and salmon. You miss nutrient-dense foods and eventually you cave, usually for a craving caused by lack of tasteful food. What to do? Make your calories count. Determine whether you're hungry, and whether it offers nutrients you need in a good-tasting package you'll enjoy. If you vow to eat only things that are good for you, you'll immediately begin to feel better.

2.) You think fat makes you fat. False. More and more we're seeing fat intake help in weight loss. It keeps you full and satisfied longer. It's trans fat that is bad. You do want to reduce that as much as possible. Even saturated fats are not as bad as we once thought. They don't have nearly the poor effect on cholesterol as trans fat does for instance. Allow yourself healthy fats. Omega 3, mono and poly saturated fats are OK. Think nut butters, nuts, seeds, avocado, salmon and olive oil.

3.) If you're cutting calories and have been watching fat chances are that you eat too little protein. As you age you lose about 8% of your muscle mass every decade starting at age 30. That accelerates even more in later decades. Each time you went on a diet taking in too little protein the weight you lost was partially protein. Losing muscle means, you guessed it, gaining fat. Starting now try to eat 30 grams of protein at three different meals a day. Beyond that include strength training in your exercise program. It will be the aging woman's best friend.

These are changes that take action but first they take thought. You'll be uncomfortable. Right now though, if you really want to lose weight, you're not all that comfortable anyway though, right? One meal at a time.

The following 5 ways are tried and tested and will more than help you get in shape for Christmas, and set you up nicely for a New Years diet.

1. Detox

Whenever you start a diet it's a good idea to go on a detox cleanse first - preferably for 2 to 4 weeks.

Why? Because this way you will shred surplus fat deposits, which is often mistaken as actual body fat and is easy to lose in the first few weeks.

Your body will also be accustomed and in tune to your true metabolism and not off kilts.

Natural detox foods would have to be those with a high anti-oxidant capacity per serving or high ORAC score.

The best of these foods which are in the top 20 for detox and cleansing would be the following fruits:

  • Wild berry

  • Cranberry

  • Blackberry

  • Raspberry

  • Strawberry

  • Red delicious, Granny Smith, Gala apple

  • Sweet cherry

  • Black plum

All the anti-oxidant fruits above contain the highest number of anthocyanins per serving - that means, they are the highest strength natural food source that will protect your body cells oxidizing, limiting the amount of toxins and free radicals into your system, while fending off ailments and most importantly, breaking down high glucose levels in the blood - meaning they will make you lose weight.

To be eaten fresh or in juices - go wild!

2. Pre-Christmas Breakfasts

Start the day off with a healthy low fat but satiating breakfast.

a) Freshly squeezed orange or lemon juice is best drank on an empty stomach as is all fruit as your body will benefit fully from all the wonderful nutrients.

b) Back that up with slow-releasing healthy carb bowl of muesli/cereal with added fruit for an even greater brighter morning.

c) Then treat your to a real ground-roasted cup of coffee with cinamon.

3. Rounded Lunchtime Meal

Lunch will see you through the afternoon so make it balanced but not heavy.

Choice ingredients:

  1. 1 piece of fruit (eaten before the meal).

  2. Vegetables or salad (lightly seasoned).

  3. Lean protein 1 dish (fish ideally).

  4. Portion of starchy foods (pasta, rice, quinoa, semolina etc).

  5. Added vegetables.

  6. 1 dairy product such as fromage frais, yoghurt, etc for dessert.

Many women like to lunch lightly so that's even better but don't starve the body of healthy fats, carbs and proteins.

4. Light Dinner Snack

After dinner, this is where least activity is carried out so keep dinner light.

  1. Vegetable soups are great healthy starters.

  2. Up to 100mg of a protein of your choice - like a steamed egg on a slice of ham on brown toast balanced with some side vegetables.

  3. Some fruit (better consumed 30 mins after for more vitamin/mineral absorption).

5. A Light Herbal Tea before Bed

Artichoke, lemon, green tea for example all contain important rejuvenating compounds such as catechins, concentrated vitamin C and citric acid.

They will flush the liver, kidney and intestine while you sleep and improve your immune system for the following day.

How Do You Lose 10 Pounds or More in a Week?

So, here are the steps you need to do in order to lose 10 pounds or more in a week!

1.Watch the Calories'. Remember it takes around 3500 calories to burn one pound. So any extra calories that you may have is gonna come right back to you.

Now this doesn't mean you should starve yourself. In fact this would hamper your goal. Starving would surely not let you gain more but it wouldn't let you lose any either. An average human being requires at least 1200 calories per day and you should take that.

Secondly you need to make a diet plan and stick to it no matter what. Your breakfast should be a fruity one. Apple, watermelon and all citrus fruits are the preferred ones but you can have anything of your choice, just not bananas. Pair it up with a green tea or lemon juice with honey and you are good to go.

2. Next you need to have a low on calorie but a nutritional lunch. Try and have some fresh green salad and boiled vegetables. Cream, oil and butter is a complete no. One general misconception is that potato increases fatness. Well it doesn't and it should be a must in your diet. Egg White is another good option. Also try to eat at regular intervals.

3. Nothing after dark. That's right complete your dinner before dark and go to bed early. Have oats or sprouts for dinner paired up with a healthy drink. If you feel the hunger crunch at night, grab a glass of water or a cup of green tea.

4. Most importantly have loads of water. It would keep you full and prevent overeating. At least try to have more than 10 glasses of water each day.

Well If you want to lose that fat you need to work that muscle up. Follow a workout regime consisting of resistance exercises paired with cardiovascular workout. Jogging and brisk walking is a must. Set a goal of burning a particular number of calories each day and weigh in daily to see the results.

5. Exercise daily, at least for 30 minutes. If daily is too much for you, do it 5 times per week. This way you will tone your muscles, and build new ones. Each new gram of muscles need 30 times more calories than a gram of fat. This way you'll be sure to lose 10 pounds at least within a week.

Losing those pound would definitely be hard but way within your limits. All you have to do is put in your heart and you will surely get there. And if you follow these steps for at least 3-4 months, you can lose 70 pounds easily.

4 Things to Consider If You Really Want to Lose Weight

Are you ready to lose some weight?

Are you tired of trying all those yucky diets and high intensive weight loss programs that promise so much and yet deliver so little?

Here are 4 things to consider if you really want to lose weight this year.

# 1 Keep Moving No Matter What

Whether you want to lose 10 pounds or you want to lose 100 pounds. You should know that it entails the same process irrespective. Once you start, you need to keep going. Whether you are jumping, running or crawling, it is crucial that you keep moving and not give up.

A magical slimming pill or fat zapping laser would not do the trick. It all starts with a decision which you slowly put into practice. Be patient and the results would definitely follow.

# 2 Variety is the Spice of Life

It is very easy to stick to certain food choices in your quest to lose weight. People want to reduce their body sizes and think it is all about sticking with tasteless salads and watery soups. You can lose weight by eating what you love.

But only in moderation and this is where counting calories come in. If you can control the calories that you take in, you are definitely on the right track.

It is important to know that when you starve yourself all in the name of dieting, you punish your body and deprive it of important nutrients that provide you with energy and leave you healthy. It is possible to eat what you love and still trim down your figure. However, it requires plenty of discipline and focus on your part.

# 3 Beef Up Your Salads

There is no rule that states that salads should not be eaten with beef. When you prepare a salad with only veggies, you are hungry in a matter of hours. And what this means is that you put pressure on yourself to eat more in the near future. It is essential to include a little bit of fat and protein, in your salads, so that you can be satisfied over a longer period of time.

So next time you want to have a lunch time salad ensure that you add 3 oz of chicken breast and you would see that it takes you until dinner to eat something else.

# 4 Exercising is Great

Exercising is great for the body. You do not have to spend tons of hours at the fitness center; neither do you have to justify how dedicated you are by testing out all the equipment at the gym. In order not to burn out, ensure that you exercise at your own pace and try not to overwork your body.

Losing weight is not something you pick up today and forget about tomorrow. It is a lifestyle. So watch and exercise to fitness videos that capture your attention. Take the stairs even when there is an elevator available for use and walk a few blocks even when you have your car sitting in the drive way.

Shedding weight is not rocket science. All you need to do is start off with one thing that contributes to your health and wellness. And when that thing comes naturally to you, move on to another. And before you know it, you are living a life with a layout of proper rules which push you towards a life of fulfillment and happiness.

How Do I Lose The Weight I Want?

This question is asked by many people at some point in their lives. As we get older we become heavier as our bodies change or our lifestyle changes. Our metabolism slows down. We slow down and as we do, we gain weight.

Many diets are suggested to help us reduce this excess weight and for some people they will work, but be aware that some diets are dangerous as they are lacking in proper nutrients that our bodies need. They may also be boring or expensive which is why many people don't stay on them for a long time.

If you really want to lose weight, there are some steps that you can incorporate into your life now which will let you reduce weight at a slow sustainable pace.

To start, you should eat lots of fruits and vegetables. These are low in calories (usually) and contain fibre which gives you a full feeling. They also contain vitamins and other elements essential not only for weight loss but for overall good health.

Drinking water is another key to weight loss. Water again, fills you up so you won't eat as much during your meals. Water also helps the body to flush out any toxins and waste that your body produces.

You should also eat protein, mainly from meats. Protein is essential for good health and helps build lean muscle which burns fat in your body. Muscles work harder which means that they require more energy which can be produced from your body's fat store.

Avoiding some types of carbohydrates is also a good strategy to help you lose weight. Now you do need some carbohydrates in your diet as well as some fat as they help the body to function properly. Too many carbohydrates such as bread, cereals and many snack foods are not the type of carbohydrates that your body needs.

You also need to exercise when on your weight loss plan. This doesn't need to be strenuous exercise, simple brisk walking is fine as long as you do it for at least 20 to 30 minutes every day. A walk after dinner or walking to work or school would be okay. If that is not possible, then just walking whenever the opportunity presents itself would be okay.

Keeping a weight loss journal is a very good idea to help you lose weight. Many people are unaware of what they eat on a daily basis. By keeping a journal, you can see what foods need to be replaced by healthier choices.

By following these steps you can lose the weight you want and these changes can become a part of the necessary lifestyle changes that you can keep for a long time.

Manage Your Weight With Reiki

In addressing issues of weight gain, it is important to take into consideration the underlying reasons of weight gain, besides just the food you may be eating. One of the underlying reasons that affects weight is the amount of stress in you life. Stess can lead to overeating as well as emotional eating. Think about when you are upset; do you tend to overeat, perhaps finishing off an entire bag of chips after a particularly stressful day at work. Or maybe you eat unhealthy "comfort" foods to excess.

Including Reiki energy healing treatments in conjunction with your weight loss efforts can give your body what it needs so that weight loss becomes easier.

So how is it that Reiki energy healing can help you manage your weight?

One of the reasons that Reiki is so beneficial for weight loss is because Reiki treatments are inherently balancing and deeply relaxing. If you have never experienced Reiki, imagine, if you would, that feeling right before you drift off to sleep. Your breathing begins to slow down and your muscles begin to relax. You are not quite "here," but you are still present. It is a blissful and restorative place to be for mind, body and spirit.

I consider Reiki to be an "intuitive" form of energy healing. As a receiver, all you need to do is simply "Be." Sessions require that you "do" nothing. The energy goes to where it is needed and it addresses the emotional, spiritual and physical aspects of your being.

On the other end of the spectrum is stress. When you are under stress, you tend to make unhealthy food choices and often overeat. Additionally, your body is in the "flight or fight" mode and this undue stress also causes your body to secrete excess cortisol. Cortisol is a hormone that has been linked to belly fat; Studies have shown that if you tend to store your fat in your belly, as opposed to your hips, you have a higher risk of developing cardiac related diseases, like heart attacks and strokes.

When you are in a relaxed state and in balance, stress melts away. You tend to make better decisions because you are not being driven by anxiety or stress. You can manage your triggers better and intuitively make better choices for your health and wellness.

With regular Reiki treatments, you can experience an overall feeling of well-being, mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.

Discover What Fish Oil Pills Can Do For You

Many Americans are increasingly turning to nutritional supplements such as fish oil to achieve better health. But first we need to ask what is fish oil pills good for and what are the benefits.

One reason why is that the average diet today is lacking in several important building blocks necessary to keep the body healthy.

Even healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables have less nutrients when compared to the same foods 50 years ago.

This is due to the fact that the soil it grows in is nutrient deficient because of the constant use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

This is not helped by the constant bombardment we get from pollution, toxins, chemicals and the day-to-day stress of modern lifestyles.

An easy way of replenishing these missing but necessary substances is through supplementation.

Discover What Fish Oil Pills Can Do For You

One such important nutrient that is lacking in many diets is the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. These fatty acids are essential and can only be obtained through food.

As a result, many people are supplementing their diets with fish oil pills which are the best source of these essential omega 3 fatty acids.

There is a vast number of health benefits to be obtained from their consumption.

Chronic inflammation is one of the main sources of many chronic illnesses such as cancer, diabetes 1, celiac disease plus many well known allergies, asthma, hay fever, rheumatoid arthritis and many of the 80 autoimmune diseases.

Omega 3, containing EPA and DHA, helps to control this chronic inflammation.

What are omega 3 fish oil pills good for and how do they work?

Omega 3s work by stimulating the production of chemicals in your body and that helps control inflammation in the joints, the bloodstream, and the tissues.

  • The American Heart Association recommends the consumption of a full gram of omega-3 fatty acids per day in order to combat various forms of heart disease.

  • Omega-3 fatty acids help to reduce high triglyceride levels. There is a strong evidence also that they prevent high blood pressure and other forms of cardiovascular disease.

  • While the benefits of omega 3 capsules for the heart is well known, there also appears to be significant anti-cancer benefits as well.

  • One large study of 35,000 women demonstrated that taking fish oil supplements led to a 32% reduction in the risk of contracting breast cancer.

  • The omega-3 fatty acids in this oil have also shown to reduce the risk of prostate cancer in mice.

  • Colon cancer is another disease that physician believe omega-3 fatty acids might help to deter.

  • There is also a lot of evidence that fatty acids supplementation can contribute to better mental health as well.

  • In one study blood levels of 100 suicide patients showed that EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) levels were extremely low in red blood cells.

  • There have also been small trials that indicated that omega-3 supplements might have some use in preventing depression.

  • Studies have also shown that feeding prison inmates a diet of fish lowered violent tendencies.

  • Various neurological diseases might also be preventable with fish oil supplementation.

  • One study showed that the DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) in fish oil might protect patients against some of the cognitive deficits associated with Alzheimer's disease.

  • However, the benefit is still rather theoretical, as some studies have failed to show a real benefit in elderly patients taking the supplement.

  • Omega-3 fatty acids do appear to confer a protective benefit to mice against the development of Parkinson's disease, although this has yet to be demonstrated in human patients.

  • If you are pregnant, taking fish oil supplements could be a really good idea. Studies have shown that breast feeding women using omega-3 conferred a measurable benefit in the brain development and visual development of young children.

  • Omega-3 supplementation in pregnant women can also be especially important given western diets are deficient in it, and often the mother's supply of EPA and DHA is depleted even further as the omega-3 acids available are usually diverted to the developing fetus.

Taking fish oil supplements appears to have a wide variety of benefits for any individual.

By starting these supplements today, you might be able to prevent many problems later in life or reduce current symptoms.

5 Foods To Help You Feel Fuller For Longer

Filling Foods

Has your stomach ever growled in anticipation of lunch, even though you just ate breakfast? At some point, we've all fallen victim to an unexplained raging appetite, which can lead to eating snacks that are high in calories, sugar and fat, and most of all, weight gain. It sounds contradictory, but eating can actually suppress your appetite - as long as you choose the right foods.

Try one of these foods as a filling snack to keep you feeling fuller for longer and the 'fridge monster' at bay.

    1. Water. We can mistake thirst for hunger. It is essential to drink between 1.5L and 3L each day depending on the size of person, how active you are and the climate. Ensure you have water to hand no matter where you are - in your car, at your desk, always carry a bottle with you. Many fruits and vegetables are high in water content, which provided volume and weight but not calories and are handy to keep you hydrated and feeling full. Including salad vegetables with your lunch and cooked veggies in the evening will help to keep you feeling fuller for longer.

    1. Fibre. High fibre foods not only provide volume, but also take longer to digest. Making you feel fuller for longer on fewer calories. Classic examples are vegetables, fruits and whole grains.

    1. Fat. Fat is high in energy and contains protein which will help to keep you feeling full and keep the cravings away. All nuts have heart-healthy fats, but almonds contain the most fibre serving, which can keep you fuller, longer. Eating about 15 almonds between lunch and dinner can stave off that 4PM energy dip, helping you avoid those crisps and cakes in the break room. Interestingly, one study suggested that our bodies may not absorb all of that fat in almonds, which might lead to an overall lower calorie intake when eating them.

    1. Eggs. A recent study found that overweight people who ate eggs for breakfast took longer to get hungry later. This is useful for everyone, not simply those who wish to lose weight. The research participants had lower levels of ghrelin, an appetite-stimulating hormone that tells the brain to eat, and higher levels of PPY, a hormone that helps stomachs feel full. Eggs are a perfect combination of protein and fat, so they're more satisfying than other breakfast foods.

  1. Avocados. The green, creamy flesh of an avocado isn't just tasty - it's also filled with fibre and heart-healthy monounsaturated fat. In other words, avocados might be the perfect fill-you-up food. Foods high in fibre and rich in fat take longer to digest, allowing you to experience less overall hunger - and possibly take in fewer calories. Research also shows that avocados' oleic acid, a monounsaturated fat, tells your brain that your stomach is full.

Meal Replacement Diets Explained

The clue is in the title. It is a diet plan where your normal meals are replaced.

This replacement can be a pre-packaged meal or a liquid meal, in the form of a shake, or a snack-type bar. You will usually replace one or two meals a day with these. Because these replacements are high in protein and low in carbohydrates and calories they will leave you feeling satisfied. In fact if you follow the manufacturer's advice and additionally drink large quantities of water you will feel quite full and not need those in between meal snacks.

Since two replacement meals per day will probably only supply 6 - 800 calories almost all will suggest a healthy nutritious meal per day in addition.

This normal meal will not only provide some additional nutrients and minerals but the extra calories will in fact help you to lose weight. As strange as that may sound, if you put your calorie intake at too low a level you run the risk of your body going into shut down mode. This is where the body sees the reduced energy (calorie) input as impending famine and hangs on to its stored reserves. These reserves are of course your body fat, the very thing that we are trying to lose.

When looking at the companies providing replacement meals you will find their web sites loaded with testimonials from satisfied customers. I am sure that these testimonials are, for the most part, real, but you should instead concentrate on the ingredients of the product. Do see that you are getting the nutrients that you need for a balanced diet. As I have said frequently elsewhere if you can't pronounce it or don't know what it is, don't put it in your mouth.

The promoters of replacement meals will have put together a product that they hope will contain the vital protein, carbohydrate, minerals and nutrients that you need to assist you in your pursuit of weight loss. There are however a few things that you should bear in mind. What your Granny said about eating less and moving more as the answer to losing weight is still true. Don't start any revised eating plan that does not include additional exercise.

Furthermore, if you use replacement meals or any other weight loss plan to achieve your ideal weight then you are to be congratulated. But all the effort will have been wasted if you then resort to the life style that got you overweight in the first place.

Take the time to learn about real food and sensible eating. Keep up the exercise and enjoy the good health that you deserve.

Maintaining Healthy Habits As You Move Through the Seasons

Don't let the weather fool you. The northeast is still experiencing some days of warmer weather even though it is the end of October. Despite the weather, I am sure you have already been experiencing a change in routine since the autumn season began. Summer is usually when healthy routines peak. People tend to eat healthier and exercise more. However, once Labor Day passes and the weather begins to cool, the healthy routines of the past few months tend to go out the window. So how do you maintain your healthy habits in fall and winter?

Healthy Meals: Follow a healthy meal plan by filling the majority of your plate with whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Choose low-fat or fat-free dairy. Try to keep your fat intake to a minimum, and make sure to focus on healthy fats such as polyunsaturated or monounsaturated fats. Remember to eat lots of fiber and drink lots of water. Fiber will keep you feeling fuller longer and decrease your desire to reach for unhealthy snacks and food. Stay away from refined grains such as white bread, white rice, or white pasta. Refined grains have no fiber and are digested quickly leaving you feeling hungry again sooner. Also remember to be mindful when eating. Try not to engage in mindless eating. Be sure to honor your hunger and when you feel full, stop eating!

Exercise: Fall is a great time to begin a physical activity routine. Beginning a new exercise routine now will likely get you through the stress of the upcoming holidays and keep you motivated through the winter.

Once the weather turns colder and is no longer bearable for outdoor exercise, you will have to get creative about how to get your exercise in. Exercising at home could be a great alternative to outdoor exercise. You do not necessarily need machines or weights; you can rely on your own body weight for some good resistance exercises. Pilates or yoga could be great for flexibility, or you can get your heart pumping with jumping jacks, lunges, push ups, and planks. If you are a member of your local gym, then I strongly encourage you to use it. You could work out at your own pace with any of the machines or you could take a class that provides a bit more structure.

The key to exercise is finding the time. We are all living very busy lives and can find a million excuses not to exercise, but with a bit of organization and structure you can find the time and will thank yourself for it. Be mindful of your schedule; look for openings even if only for fifteen to thirty minutes, anything is better than nothing. If blocking out specific workout time in your appointment book works better for you then do it. Try to always have your workout clothes with you or in your car. Knowing you are carrying your workout clothes may be the psychological motivation you need. Or, lay out your clothes so that when you get home, your workout clothes are the first things you see, making it harder to ignore the obligation to exercise.

Find a partner to buddy up with for your workout. When you do not feel up to the task, your buddy can give you that little extra push to get over the hump and into action.

Sleep: Try to maintain a regular sleep schedule as much as possible. The circadian clock regulates the sleep-wake cycle. Regular bed and wake times can keep our circadian clocks working correctly and enhance the onset of sleep at night. Getting sufficient amount of sleep will maintain health, mood, and weight. Sufficient sleep will keep the immune system working efficiently, therefore decreasing illnesses such as the common cold. Not getting enough sleep could possibly trigger or exacerbate chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and obesity.

Obesity resulting from lack of sleep is two-fold. Lack of sleep leaves you energy deprived, therefore leaving you less motivated to exercise or prepare healthy meals. Additionally, sleep plays an important role in regulating the hormone leptin. Leptin plays a key role in satiety. When you don't get enough sleep, leptin levels drop making you feel hungrier, increasing the potential to reach for high-fat, high-calorie foods. Sleep also has other health benefits such as enhancing mood and memory.

Water: Staying hydrated is important; it is imperative to drink the recommended daily intake. Drinking adequate amounts of water will keep your metabolism working at its full capacity, keep you energized and attentive, keep your short-term memory working, and quench your thirst which is often mistaken for hunger. Make sure to stay hydrated with water as opposed to high sugar content soft drinks or fruit drinks, coffee, and energy drinks.

Just because the leaves are changing colors and the weather is changing from warm to cool doesn't mean your health should change too. Being mindful about your health and wellness will keep you on track to upholding a healthy routine. Just remember some of the tips outlined here to maintain balance in your life.

How to Get Rid of the Afternoon Blahs

Do you often feel rundown and out of energy in the afternoon? Much of the reason for that can be attributed to our diet, and more specifically do we burn more sugar or fat as our primary fuel source. The diet of our ancestors was established to burn fat as their primary fuel. But with sugar and simple carbohydrates becoming a larger part of the modern diet most of us now use sugar or glucose as our go-to fuel source. And with less fat being burned, more fat is stored, causing weight problems.

How does a person know if he or she is sugar or fat adapted? If you can skip a meal or go for several hours without food and not get irritable, suffer severe hunger or crave sugar or carbohydrates you probably are fat adapted. But if you need a sugar fix when you have an empty stomach and if you don't get it you suffer from those post-lunch blahs, you are at greater risk of a wide range of chronic degenerative diseases.

There are ways to get your body to becoming fat adapted instead of sugar adapted. Here are a few things to consider making sure they're in your lifestyle:

1. Diet. We have to replace carbohydrates with healthy fats, but all carbs are not created equal in the diet we choose. Grains and sugars are harmful carbohydrates and should be as much as possible eliminated from the diet. But they should be replaced by healthy carbs, and those we get from vegetables. Since carbohydrates from vegetables are less dense than those from grains, you have to eat substantially more vegetables to make up the difference.

Then we have to increase our intake of healthy fats. Increasing your caloric intake of healthy fats to a little more than half of total calories should be a goal. Foods that fall into the monounsaturated group are avocados, nuts, olives and olive oil and canola oil. In the polyunsaturated group are omega-3s found in fish and walnuts, flaxseed and pumpkin seeds. Eggs and coconut oil is also good.

The well-known Mediterranean Diet contains both monounsaturated fats as well as omega-3 fats. Eliminating all Trans-fat and reducing saturated fat, which is by the way a vital part of the diet, to less than 10% of your total caloric intake would be a good goal.

2. Exercise. Many experts have placed this as the focus for eliminating afternoon fatigue. Afternoon training is probably the best for most people, but it is probably not the time for pushing yourself to the max. Especially if you work in a high-stress environment, more moderate exercise like yoga might actually help the brain slow down but not become totally relaxed. Use your more high-intensity training for the weekends or after work, but not within three hours of bedtime.

3. Proper sleep. Not getting proper sleep is an obvious culprit to afternoon blahs, but properly addressing diet and exercise issues will go a long way to making sure you get a good night's rest. There are plenty of dos and don'ts on sleep, but the most important one is probably to remain on a regular schedule. This will eliminate having the body guess when it should be the time of day to turn in for the night.

Are You Over-Thinking Your Diet?

If you stop anyone on the street in this country today, there is a great chance that they will be on a diet. Low-fat, low-carb, no meat, no dairy, sugar free, gluten free: these types of diets are wide and varied. When looking at the world's population, the communities that have the highest rates of longevity show a large array in the types of foods they consume, but one commonality is seen across all of the world's oldest communities--they eat a high percentage of plant based foods, which are relatively low fat.

Many health experts are coming into the agreement that there is no one "cure all" diet for every person, but the more plants you eat, the better it is for your health. Aim to get more of your calories from plants per day than from animal sources. It is really that simple.

Okinawa, Japan, continues to be among one of the oldest living and healthiest populations on Earth. The people in Okinawa show an 80 percent lower instance of heart disease, 75 percent lower cases of prostate and breast cancer, and 67 percent lower risk of dementia than the population of the U.S. These people regularly consume a high amount of carbohydrates, including grains and legumes. They eat about 6 percent of their diet from fat, low animal products, and high amounts of sea vegetables.

Of course, you do not have to adopt a Japanese diet to increase your longevity. Simply focusing on increasing vegetable intake can drastically lower your risk of heart disease, and increasing consumption of raw vegetables may help you to get to 100. One study found that people who ate five servings of vegetables and fruits daily, lived about 3 years longer than those who did not, even eating just one fruit can extend your life by 1.5 years.

The answer to a healthier life really is that simple. Increase plant consumption, make sure that more of your daily calories are from plant sources. When preparing your dinner plate make sure that the majority is plant based. Try lowering meat consumption to once daily to decrease risk of heart disease. Doctors and cardiologists who emphasize an interest in healing and reversing chronic diseases with plant based diets, suggest that the first word of health advice should be simply, "eat more fruits and vegetables, raw when you can."

Are You Getting Enough Fruits and Vegetables? Your Body Needs Them!

No seriously, are you?

Think about it. You may initially think you are. Then you may realize you aren't. The USDA states you need between 2-3 cups of fruits AND vegetables per day, depending on your age and activity level. I personally think we need more than that. Where do you stand? Are you getting the recommended 2-3 cups of produce per day? If not, let's get you there. If you are getting that amount, can you fit in more?
At least half of your plate at every meal should be produce. I also try to get in more than what the USDA recommends because sadly in today's world, conventional produce may not be as healthful as it once was. Our food is genetically modified, sprayed with chemicals, and picked before ready so it can be shipped hundreds of miles away and then "gassed" to ripen just before you purchase it. There is no way possible that a tomato of this caliber can be as nutritious, or even flavorful, as a homegrown, organic tomato that was the norm so many years ago.

So how can you squeeze more in without feeling like you just had Thanksgiving dinner? It's easy!

Smoothies are a wonderful breakfast, even if you eat something else with it (they also make great snacks). Add fresh or frozen fruit to any other smoothie ingredients you would like. You can even add vegetables! Carrots and pumpkin taste wonderful, and spinach and kale, while they may color your smoothie a bright green color, are completely covered up by the fruit you pair it with (pineapple is a great one).

Juice! Juicing is an easy way to get in extra vegetables. Be careful with too much fruit juice, though; although it's natural sugar, it's still a concentrated source of sugar. The best juice would be mostly vegetables with a little fruit for flavor. Apples are wonderful. Make sure when juicing that you use organic produce for at least "The Dirty Dozen", since you will be concentrating your fruits and veggies - http://www.ewg.org/foodnews/summary.php

Add fruit to cereals, salads and desserts. I love to have mixed berries on top of my frozen yogurt. Chopped fruit makes a great addition to many savory dishes as well, such as a mango salsa on salmon or dried fruit in a couscous dish.

Add chopped veggies to almost any dish! Soups, stews, pastas and many other main dishes can all benefit from added vegetables. Try having salad with your dinner; not only will you get in more veggies, the fiber will help to fill you up so you eat less of the other foods. Throw extra toppings on your burger or sandwiches - instead of a thin slice of tomato, some pickles and one iceberg lettuce leaf, try a thick slice of tomato, onion, cucumber, bell pepper and a few leaves of a dark leafy green like romaine or spinach. Dining out? Ask for extra vegetables to be added to any dish.

Snacks are a wonderful way to get in these extra foods - a piece of fresh, ripe juicy fruit is a wonderful break from your day. Cut up raw vegetables are fun to munch - try dipping in plain Greek yogurt seasoned with herbs or in hummus.

As you can see, it's very easy to incorporate more fruits and vegetables into your diet. Your body and brain will thank you!

The Detoxifying Properties of Wheatgrass

Fifty million years ago, our guardian angel, the grass, arrived to our planet - to make life possible, and to prepare the Earth for the human race.
~Edmond Bordeaux Szekely

Einstein laid the groundwork for nearly all natural health care models when he showed the world that everything, including the human body, at its most fundamental level, is vibrating energy that follows natural laws. Health is the result of cooperating with these natural laws of our being, and science supports the premise that there are no nutrients in animal-based foods that are not better obtained by plant-based foods.

The Standard American Diet (or SAD) for most Americans consists of ultra-high level fat content foods with high levels of preservatives. Toxins from red and white meats, water, air and other environmental factors can leave your insides feeling worn and run-down. An average American will eat 4-6 meals/day and have a typical bowl-movement once a day. This leaves anywhere from 5-8 meals of food sitting in your system at any given time.

Natural plant based foods are the Holy Grail. Their chemical and biological composition creates a symphony of sustainability, proper functioning, and internal healing that is in direct contrast to the stresses and illnesses placed on the body by animal based and heavily processed foods.

Dr. Ann Wigmore founded the Hippocrates Institute, developed the Living Foods Lifestyle (raw, plant-based nutrition), and introduced wheatgrass to America over 40 years ago. She did extensive research and found that it was possible to heal the body of serious dis-ease by taking in the proper nutrients and eliminating toxins from the body. Her research showed that live foods and wheatgrass promoted a considerable rate of recovery for many suffering from advanced levels of dis-ease.

Wheatgrass juice has the amazing ability to detoxify the body almost immediately after consumption. When beginning a wheatgrass detox, start slowly, drinking only one ounce of juice per day. As the body begins to eliminate toxins, old drug deposits and poisons, it can be much like experiencing the flu. Headaches, muscle aches, fatigue, nausea, occasional vomiting, dizzy and spaced-out feelings, and nerve symptoms can develop depending on your level of toxicity. These symptoms usually begin to ease up after the first week. After the detox phase, the chlorophyll in the grass juice begins to build and refine the tissues.

Dr. Ann Wigmore's detox protocol is as follows:

~Begin with one ounce of juice per day.
~Drink the juice 1 hour before meals and at least 2 hours after.
~If detox symptoms are not happening, after about a week increase the amount gradually... over a period of weeks.
~The maximum recommended amount is 4 to 6 ounces per day. Most find 2 to 3 ounces to be energizing and detoxifying.
~She also recommends that during the initial two weeks, in order to alleviate detox symptoms, daily enemas and a colonic should be taken once per week. Anytime a live juice or live food regime is initiated, the body becomes strong enough to eliminate toxins at the cell level, and the blood stream and lymphatic system begin to carry them out. The organs of elimination include the bowel, kidneys, lungs, and skin. It is important that the bowels be kept clear with either enemas or colonics. Toxins that sit in the bowel tend to reabsorb into the bloodstream. This is what causes symptoms such as headaches and nausea. Ingesting fiber, such as ground flax seed, is also helpful.
~Drink plenty of water... at least one quart for every fifty pounds of body weight. When toxins are eliminated via the kidneys, skin and other detox problems are less likely to develop.
~Toxins in the body tend to find a way out, and it is best if we keep them moving out through the proper channels. Living food (raw plant-based nutrition) also assists in removing toxins naturally.
~People who are extremely ill and begin wheat grass should do it under the direction of a health practitioner.
~It is also recommended that while going through detox, one should cut down on the amount of animal protein eaten. Try to focus on fruits and vegetables (raw), and fruit and vegetable juices. This allows the body to use all its energy to eliminate rather than using this energy to digest food.
~After a short period of time, many people notice that the juice makes them nauseous. This is a typical reaction and might be the body's signal to slow down a bit or change from wheatgrass to barley grass juice.
~Dr. Wigmore found that after several weeks or months on the juice, the body begins to heal present and past illnesses that have been suppressed.

Immune Superheroes: 10 Superfoods to Boost Your Immunity

It was early October when we awoke to a paper bag at our doorstep with a ghost stapled to the outside. That night, while my daughters were in bed and sleeping, we were ghosted! The girls were thrilled with excitement and began immediately planning for their own ghosting ritual.

The concept is pretty simple. Fill a bag with some Halloween candy, attach a ghost with instructions, bring it to someone's doorstep, ring the bell, and run.

That evening, we hopped into the car and ghosted two of their friends. The girls were dressed in wigs and sunglasses, my husband behind the wheel. For a moment, we felt invincible, like superheroes!

But, whether it was the thrill of the excitement or just that time of year, my younger daughter woke up with the sniffles on Monday morning. Not so super...

Sniffles, and other early signs of a flu, cold, or virus are the perfect time to give your immune system a healthy boost.

At the onset of a sickness, remove all refined sugar, it will only serve to compromise your immune system. Instead, a whole foods diet rich in seasonal fruits and vegetables is your best line of defense.

Here are 10 of my favorite immune superheroes, perfect to support you through fall and winter's cold and flu season:

1. Coconut Milk Kefir - A probiotic-rich food that keeps the gut and intestinal tract free from disease-causing germs.
2. Camu Camu Powder - A superfood high in vitamin C, which tops the list of immune-boosting vitamins.
3. Almonds - A great source of vitamin E, also key for strong immunity.
4. Sugar Pumpkin - Contains beta-carotene, which converts to vitamin A, a broad regulator of the immune system.
5. Tahini - Sesame seed paste that is high in magnesium and zinc, both immune-supportive. Zinc is a mineral commonly deficient in our diets.
6. Oregano - Anti-fungal; stimulating to the immune system. The leaves or oil are preferential to the powder.
7. Garlic - Anti-fungal; fights off infections and bacteria.
8. Medicinal mushrooms - Chinese wisdom validates the impact of mushrooms on immunity, especially the Maitake and Shitake.
9. Fish - Your essential fats, which help to protect the lungs and respiratory system from colds; and selenium, particular to helping clear the flu virus out of your body.
10. Chicken Soup - It turns out that scientific researchers are just beginning to discover the healing properties of bone broth, confirming that our grandmothers' remedy does, in fact, have medicinal value.

A whole foods diet, rich in anti-oxidants (colorful fruits and veggies) plus these ten superfoods will fuel your body's immune system with the essential fats, vitamins, minerals, herbs and probiotic support it needs for a quick recovery.

While eating healthfully doesn't exclude us from getting sick, I've found that with good dietary support we are able to prevent many of the sniffles from turning into full-blown illnesses. And viruses that lasted weeks are often over in days.

To your health, & my daughter's!

Holistic Therapies - What Are Holistic Therapies and Do They Work?

As healthcare costs increase, many people have begun looking to alternative medicine for solutions to their health needs. But with so many differing opinions out there, how can a person know the best course of action to take?

Let's start with a definition for Holistic Therapies. Holistic therapies involve treating a patient as a whole, rather than just treating the symptoms. A person using such therapies will look for the cause of the symptoms and attempt to treat and prevent the problem. In other words, they will look into a patient's physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental wellbeing before recommending a course of action.

Some Examples of Holistic Therapies

There are many types of holistic treatments. Just a few of the most common ones include:

  • Acupuncture

  • Aromatherapy

  • Reflexology

  • Massage Therapy

  • Chiropractic Treatment

  • Physical Therapy

  • Yoga

  • Hypnotherapy

  • Psychotherapy

  • Herbal Remedies

So Do Holistic Therapies Work?

Holistic therapies have been shown to work for many individuals. In fact, different types of holistic treatments are more widely used throughout the world than Western medicine. These treatments and treatment plans are usually naturally derived, less invasive, and more affordable. However, often holistic therapies have less research involved into their effectiveness.

Perhaps the best way to know if a certain holistic therapy is right for you is to research the specific treatment plan and see if it is something you want to move forward with. Then, since these plans are generally very affordable, give it a try and see if it works for you.

Why Should I Try Holistic?

You may have heard the joke that medical doctors are just "practicing," which is why their office is called a practice. The joke becomes disheartening when you realize that it is also referring to the way doctors often get a diagnosis wrong several times before they get it right (if they ever get it right). It's not that the doctor doesn't know what he's doing, but he doctor is not the patient, and therefore can't pinpoint every nuance. As a people, we have become less in tune to our bodies and rely on others to tell us what is wrong and what we should do to correct our ailment. Holistic treatments rely heavily on a patient being aware of what is going on in his or her body and working with a natural healer to meet needs while addressing a root cause of symptoms.

Regardless of whether or not you feel that holistic therapies are right for you, it is important for all of us to educate ourselves about all of our options. And most importantly, we should gain at least some level of independence when it comes to our health.

In Defense of Placebos

Despite eight months of therapy since John's car accident there was still a nagging pain in his right shoulder. An MRI could not find the source of his pain, and his medications did little to give him relief. Frustrated, John went to a holistic doctor who gave him homeopathic drops and instructed him to do a special breathing technique several times a day. Within two days John's pain vanished, and he hurried to share the good news with his medical doctor. His doctor was not impressed though. He dismissed the story, explaining that John's recovery was no more than a "placebo effect."

This confused John. While one part of him was happy to be feeling better, another part of him felt uneasy. Something about the way his doctor referred to "placebo" made John feel that his loss of pain was of little value - that it was being dismissed because he had somehow "cheated" the healing process by using techniques that were as unscientific and unverifiable as sorcery.

Welcome to the misunderstood world of placebos

Placebo comes from a Greek word that translates as "I will help". It is a ritual wherein we may take a potion, eat a food, or do some behavior - AND add to that a belief that through our eating or doing, some beneficial outcome will happen for us. Eating sugar pills with the belief that they will cure us of some condition is a common placebo. So too are a great many of the superstitions and other rituals we perform on a regular basis. As long as our placebos are harmless and lead to good outcomes, most of us generally accept them without too much grumbling.

It's not a question of whether placebos work. They do. When used creatively, a good placebo can be powerful enough to help us overcome just about any malady that comes our way - from pains and allergies to autoimmune disorders, even cancers.

But let's be clear about what placebos are and what they are not. Placebos consist of two elements. The first is what we call a black box. The second is our intention.

The "black box" portion of our placebo has no mechanical, electrical or chemical properties that can scientifically or logically explain why our beneficial outcomes are happening. It is the non-functional, non-operational, and essentially the dummy portion of our placebo. The purpose of the black box is to give us something to focus on while the true force that orchestrates our healing does its work - and that force comes from the power of our intention.

"Our intention is one of the most powerful forces in all eternity.

It is the key driving force behind all placebos."

When we learn how to directly access our power of intention in a positive way, it motivates our innate forces to bring us clarity, well being, and joy in our life. If we haven't figured out how to directly access the power of our intentions though, we can always do it indirectly through the black box portion of our placebos. As long as we are clear that the black boxes are merely vehicles for our intention everything is generally OK. If not it can be a problem. Black boxes are notorious for being misrepresented as the true cause of our outcomes. Sometimes this is done for fun and profit. At other times it is just done out of ignorance. How often have we heard of someone who got magical results from some potion or product - and when we tried the same product it did nothing for us?

For example - one man believed that by watching comedy movies, his cancer would go away. He watched diligently and his cancer vanished. The movies were his "black box". It gave him the ability to channel the true healing tool - his power of his intention.

Other cancer victims heard of the man's story and tried to replicate his good fortune by watching the same comedy movies - yet died right on schedule. The difference - they didn't realize that the "black box" had no actual power - that all of the power lay in their intention, and that lay essentially untapped.

We also need to be clear about the type of miseries that best respond to intention-based therapies. The following story helps illustrate this point:

If we dream that a tiger is chasing us, a real life gun will never be able to save us from our peril. Only a dream gun will. Conversely, if we are out in the jungle and a real life tiger is chasing us, a dream gun will be of no value to us. Only a real life gun will be able to get the job done.

Many of our mishaps come from physical causes - car crash injuries, falling down stairs, work place injuries. These miseries are best addressed using conventional therapies. On the other hand, we experience far more miseries that begin in our mind - or that come from the dream tigers we have conjured up. For them, placebos and other intention based therapies are the best dream guns we can use to address them.

In healthcare we need a broad collection of tools, some that can address the miseries that come from our mind and some that can address the miseries that come from physical causes. Medicine and physical therapy are profoundly powerful tools for addressing the miseries that come from "physical" causes. BUT when we use them to try to resolve "physical-appearing" conflicts that were caused by our minds we end up squandering our resources. Plainly put - physical tools do not resolve mind problems, and it is frustrating when patients are given psychiatric medications because their doctors can't figure out why they are in pain, and they don't know what else to do.

A new training is called for - one that categorizes these intention-based therapies. A large number of them are utter nonsense, but not ALL of them.

How can I be so certain of this? Easy - I was the holistic doctor who gave John the homeopathic drops and taught him how to breathe. John is but one of a vast number of patients whose physical pain did not come from a physical source. His pain was brought on by stress and anxiety. He is a typical example of how a good intention based therapy can overcome these pains when nothing else will.

And so in defense of placebos, let's not be so quick to judge them so negatively. They serve as fun, colorful devices that can stimulate our innate powers to heal many parts of us that are untouchable by conventional medical healthcare. In a surprising number of cases - they are the right tool for the job. Placebos have been cloaked in negativity for far too long. Maybe it's time to give 'em a fresh look.

Drink Your 'Cold' Away in Days!

Drinking for your good health is much different than drinking to your good health. When drinking organic raw fresh fruits and vegetables you naturally boost your immune system. Organic, fresh, raw, fruits and vegetables contain vital minerals and vitamins that can stimulate healing in the body, which in turn, allows the body to heal itself naturally from dis-ease and dis-order.

The definition of eating healthy is eating foods that contain vitamins and minerals on a daily basis. As a naturopathic doctor, and a student of this science for over 15 years, this definition also includes eating foods that are rich in natural nutrients that come from planet earth to nourish our bodies. That is it and that is all. So when you eat more fresh, organic, fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts and seeds, you are doing more for your body's health than any pill or prescription medication can do. The reason these foods provide nutrition to the body is because they are chock full of vitamins and minerals the body needs every day. You cannot get vitamins and minerals from a Pepsi or a Twinkie. When you eat vitamins and minerals, your body has more of what it needs to defend against dis-eases.

'Let food be thy medicine and Let medicine by thy food'. This ancient axiom has stood the test of time for a reason. When you have a dis-ease or a dis-order, your body has the ability to heal itself naturally. The healing process cannot begin however, until the body has been given the right nutrition. When the body receives the proper nutrients healing is stimulated, the immune system kicks in, the body fights back and health is restored. Hence, the recipe below and the ingredients listed will show that food can help the body heal itself natually.

DRINK RECIPE FOR SINUS AND COLD VIRUSES

Ingredients:

(Remember all ingredients should be organic for this formula.)

  • 1 whole lemon - Contains Vitamin K which boosts the immune system.

  • 1 tablespoon Ginger Powder - Encourages sweating by increasing circulation.

  • 1 tablespoon Garlic Powder - A natural antibiotic. 4 cloves are equal to 1 dose of penicilin.

  • 1/4 teaspoon Cayenne Pepper - Stimulates the healing process in the body because it is a stimulant herb and also encourages sweating.

  • 2 tablespoons Raw Unfiltered Honey - Contains enzymes that initiate healing in the body and is good for digestion.

  • 3 cups of boiling water

Directions:

Cut up a lemon leaving the peel on the fruit. In a blender pour in all your ingredients including the lemon. VERY slowly pour in the boiling water. Be sure to completely cover the blender with the lid so the water does not come out of the blender as it is blending the ingredients. It is important NOT to over fill the blender so if you do not use all 3 cups of water that is fine. Press the liquefy setting on the blender and let all the ingredients blend together into a drink that can be left out at room temperature or refrigerated. Consume this drink every 2 to 3 hours until symptoms are gone.

Neurotherapy Facts

As a relatively new treatment modality for cognitive, emotional, and even physical ailments, neurotherapy is somewhat shrouded in mystery. Though there are many myths about neurotherapy, there is also a wealth of research supporting this type of treatment with respect to anxiety, ADHD, depression, seizure disorders, and even addictions. So let's discuss some neurotherapy facts, especially as they relate to common myths.

Myth: Neurofeedback is not an empirically supported treatment.

In fact, while most physicians are not trained or sometimes even taught about neurotherapy, the fact remains that there is a wealth of published research supporting its efficacy. Unfortunately, physicians receive almost no training in biofeedback or neurofeedback - the most common neurotherapy techniques. Originally developed by psychophysiologists, articles in multiple peer reviewed journals have time-and-time again documented effective uses for neurotherapy. Indeed, journals such as Clinical EEG, Neuroscience Journal, and Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback are excellent sources of information that outline the beneficial effects of neurotherapy; and research about these therapies continues to be published in such journals to this day.

Myth: All neurotherapy treatments are the same.

There are many different methods and technologies for applying neurotherapy principles, but the experience of the therapist should never be underestimated. Just as you would meet with different family doctors before choosing one, you should also consider meeting with and learning about various neurotherapy practitioners in your area. Not only should you find a qualified, experienced neurotherapist who has an excellent understanding of the treatments and science, but you also want to work with a practitioner with whom you can build a positive rapport.

Myth: Neurotherapy treatment effects are immediate.

While some patients experience very quick improvements, usually within the first few weeks, the majority of patients require multiple sessions to achieve the full effects of neurotherapies. Not only does the expertise of the therapist impact the response rate of patients, but individual neural differences can also have an impact. In fact, somewhere around 40% of patients will require treatment for up to 10 weeks before they start to see marked improvements.

Myth: Neurotherapy and medication are not complimentary therapies.

In fact, a combination of neurotherapy and prescription treatment seems to be a very effective treatment program for many patients. Your neurotherapist should be able to provide you with information regarding the types of medication that are useful in combination with neurofeedback treatments.

Myth: The effects of neurotherapy treatments are temporary.

While occasional tune-ups help to maintain the effectiveness of neurotherapy treatments, many of the effects of this type of treatment are maintained for the long term. In order to establish the longest lasting results, most neurotherapy specialists recommend regular treatments for at least 8-12 weeks.

Myth: Neurotherapy is invasive.

For some reason, many people imagine neurotherapy as an invasive treatment on the brain; in fact, the non-invasive biological condition techniques associated with neurotherapy do not require direct stimulation of the brain. No electricity is emitted to the brain as is the case with electro-convulsive therapies.

Many Auto Accident Victims Also Suffer From Ankle Injuries

Every day thousands of people are involved in car accidents every day. Sprained ankles are a common injury in motor vehicle accidents. Most people unfortunately do not think to mention their ankle pain after the accident, concentrating only on their neck and back pains. Without knowledge of the ankle injury your healthcare provider cannot correct the problem, and that will likely lead to a life of future ankle and foot problems.

The ankle is a very complex joint designed to absorb massive amounts of force as you walk, run and jump. This absorption of forces helps to protect your knees, hips, and back. With just walking your ankles will absorb 125% of your bodyweight, while running they absorb approximately 250%-300% of your bodyweight.

Ankle sprain is an overstretching or tearing of one or more of the ligaments of the ankle/foot. Ligaments are very tough fibrous bands of connective tissue that help to hold bones in place, and keep them from moving too far. Most ankle sprains, approximately 95% are inversion sprains. An inversion sprain occurs when the foot rolls to outside with the toes pointing downward. This motion happens when your foot is on the brake or the floor board, while being rear-ended or hit from the side.

With the ankle injury it is very important that the ankle, as well as the other injuries, be evaluated by a healthcare specialist that is trained in the evaluation and treatment of auto accident and extremity injuries. Without a proper diagnosis it is impossible to have a proper treatment protocol for your injury.

Ankle sprains are placed in 3 categories, based on the severity of the injury. There are some clues that will tell you how severe the could be, such as a popping sound, rapid onset of swelling, and amount of bruising, but the severity is really only determined after an evaluation by a trained professional.

Grade 1 sprains are mild over stretching of one or more of the ligaments of the ankle. With these injuries you can usually still walk and run in a straight line without too much problem.

Grade 2 sprains are moderate to severe over stretching and possible mild tearing of the ligaments of the ankle. With this injury the person usually can walk but is unable to run and lateral motions are not possible in most cases.

Grade 3 sprains are moderate to full tearing of one or more of the ligaments in the ankle. With this injury the person generally cannot bear any weight without bracing.

Grade 1 and 2 sprains can be treated with manual manipulation of the affected joints of the ankle and a thorough rehabilitative exercise program. These injuries usually heal very quickly if treated properly.

Grade 3 sprains will often times require an evaluation by an orthopedic specialist. These will often be required to be casted and on occasion have a surgical procedure. After this they too will require a proper rehabilitation program.

What Is Hijamah?

Hijamah comes from the arabic root word "ha ja ma" which means "to diminish in volume", and refers to the reduction in blood volume or to the vacuum effect used to draw blood from the body. In the case of the ahaadeeth (sayings of the Prophet[SAW]) about hijamah it refers to the drawing of blood from the body for therapeutic purposes, either to support health in the case of one who is not sick or to cure a specific illness or ailment.

The vacuum or sucking effect can be achieved by many different methods including sucking with the mouth directly over a cut or wound (as in the case of poisonous bites), using a leech to draw blood, the use of instruments such as animal horns as was done in ancient times, or the more modern methods of using bamboo, glass or plastic "cups", either with fire or a pump mechanism.

The practice of applying a partial vacuum by these means causes the tissues beneath the cup to be drawn up and swell, thereby increasing blood flow to the affected area. This enhanced blood flow draws impurities and toxins away from the nearby tissues and organs towards the surface for elimination via the break in the skin layer created through the incisions made prior to the application of the "cup" or similar device.

Though Hijamah is commonly translated as "cupping" amongst english speakers, this is not an accurate translation because cupping in the modern sense can refer to both "dry" (where no blood is removed) and "wet" forms (which is Hijamah). Cupping is the practice of using cups, which can be of different materials, to create suction at the skin level in order to draw blood to the surface, which may then be removed in the case of "wet" cupping.

The earliest historical evidence of the use of Hijamah is from the ancient Egyptians. One of the oldest egyptian medical text books, written in approximately 1550 BC, describes "bleeding" used to 'remove pathogens from the body'. It is evident that bloodletting was considered a remedy for almost every type of disease as well as an important means of preserving good health and life.

Hippocrates and Galen were also great advocates of Hijamah. In Hippocrates' time bloodletting was topological and not used in terms of the theory of the 4 humors. Specific points were bled for specific illnesses. Galen explains that the principle indication for bloodletting is to eliminate residues or divert blood from one part of the body to another. His approach was based on two key Unani concepts prevalent at the time. First, that blood didn't circulate well in the body, and that it eventually went stagnant until it was "let out". Secondly, the concept of the balance of the four humors (blood, phlegm, black bile and yellow bile) was the source of health or illness, in which case bloodletting is used to bring about balance between these humors. Mapping out the blood vessels of the body, Galen would cut his patients in different areas, depending on what area he wanted to treat.

In the East, Bloodletting and wet cupping was always an integral part of the medical practices, and remains so to this day. The ancient Chinese medical text which is widely regarded as the oldest medical text in existence, the Nei Jing, or Inner Classic says that:

"if there is stagnation it must be first be resolved through bloodletting before the application of acupuncture or moxibustion."

By the mid to late 1800s however, bloodletting was sharply criticized by the medical fraternity and had fallen away as a popular method. Because of the procedure not being practiced correctly it was becoming responsible for a large number of deaths and therefore was increasingly being discredited by modern medicine, the newly established scientific model of medicine also began discrediting all other previously established traditional therapies in order to gain medical dominance.

In the past 20 to 30 years however, it has found a tremendous resurgence amongst Muslim communities, with courses being offered to both medical practitioners and the public in some countries like the UK.

There are many ahaadeeth that recommend the use of Hijamah such as this one:

Jabir bin Abdullah (RA) relates that he heard Rasulullah (SAW) saying: "If there is any good in your treatments it is in the blade of the Hajjaam, a drink of honey or branding by fire (cauterisation), whichever suits the ailment, and I do not like to be cauterized" (Bukhari & Muslim)

Hijamah though is a medical procedure that involves the handling of blood and body fluids and therefore while it has many benefits for general health and the treatment of illnesses, it must be performed by someone who has special training in Hijamah and the associated medical sciences in order to avoid adverse effects from the procedure.

Natural Remedies for Sciatica - Treat Sciatic Nerve Pain Now

If you are dealing with sciatica then you most likely know the pain that is associated with it. Dealing with pain in your lower back, legs and even your hips can make it very difficult to function in life. Carrying out even the smallest tasks can be very complicated and painful. Therefore, you may want to find some remedies for sciatica that are going to be effective and help you relieve the pain.

Naturally, there are going to be some medications that may be effective when it comes to decreasing the pain that you may be experiencing. Some medical professionals are going to prescribe anti-inflammatory medications. Others may prescribe muscle relaxants. Some individuals have even found relief from anti-seizure medications. You will always need to speak with your doctor so that they will be able to determine what type of medication will be the best for you.

Once the pain has started to decrease, and you are finding some relief, you may be encouraged to attend physical therapy. You may find this to be very helpful as the physical therapist is going to be able to give you some exercises and programs that may be able to help decrease the possibility of injuries in the future. Participants will also be instructed on how to improve posture and increase their flexibility so that they do not become injured again.

In very serious situations, when you are not getting relief from any other types of therapies, your doctor may recommend surgery. This option will often only be suggested if you are suffering from weakness, your bowels are effected by the pressure on the nerve or your pain is continuing to get worse.

Of course, there are going to be some remedies that you can implement at home to try to decrease the pain that you are experiencing. It may be a benefit to you to place a cold pack on the painful for roughly 20 minutes each day. Next, you may find relief if you try to alternate heat and cold packs throughout the day. Just make sure that you are using your heat pack on the lowest setting.

Those that are looking for alternative treatment methods could try chiropractic services or even acupuncture. It is important to remember that not all individuals will find relief from these options. Therefore, it is going to be important for you to try different things to see what will help you the most. You could even speak with your doctor before hand to see what they may recommend.

Drug Addiction and Withdrawal Guide

Drug Addiction is defined as an abnormal, compulsive use, use for non-medical purposes and continued use despite harm or risk of harm. It is a huge problem especially in the United states with people abusing prescription medications such as Percocet (oyxcodone and acetominophen), Xanax (alprazolam), and Roxicodone (oxycodone) and Vicodin (hydrocodone and acetominophen). In this brief article, I will explain some of the most commonly asked questions with regards to rx drug abuse from everyday people.

The first question is related to oxycodone. Oxycodone is one of the most worldwide known abused drugs in the world. It is referred to on the street as "Oxys", Roxi's(for brand Roxicodone) or its percocet (oxycodone/apap) friend "512′s". 512 is name of the number listed on the percocet tablet that can be identified. Oxycodone is considered a class II medication which means they can be highly addictive and abused.

How much Oxycodone can I take without overdosing?

There is no ceiling dose when taking oxycodone. There is no specific "max dose". You hear people saying "After time, It stops working". This is because your body stops reacting to that same dose because your body goes through physiologic alteration. The exact mechanism is unknown. Some theories predict that a change of the number of pain receptors is decreased or the receptor site is actually altered resulting in a higher dose to produce a similar response. It is this change in the body which results in withdrawal symptoms when the receptors are not occupied.

What are the symptoms oxycodone withdrawal?

Anxiety, irritability, backache, joint pain, nausea, insomnia, increased blood pressure, heart rate, chills

Restlessness, sweating, lacrimation (abnormal or excessive excretion of tears)

The second question usually deals with a different class of medication called benzodiazepine class. They are in the top 10 prescription drugs dispensed in the United States each year. Benzodiazepine class includes Valium (diazepam), Ativan (lorazepam), Xanax (alprazolam) and a few others. They are called "Benzos" or Zannie's on the street.

Why can Xanax, Valium and the Benzodiazepine Class be the most scariest prescription drug ever made?

In brief, alprazolam and diazepam work by inhibited GABA. GABA is neurotransmitter in the brain that regulates excitability. Basically, these drugs have a central nervous system depressant activity on the brain. If these neurons are blocked for long periods of time, your FIGHT and Flight Response assumes this is normal, and your body makes adjustments. Consequently, when they are not blocked(not on the drug) you experience everything that the drug is actually treating (anxiety, irritability, etc). The actual term is called Rebound Anxiety.

Can I mix Alcohol with Xanax or Valium?

Alcohol and "Benzos" are very dangerous. They both have depressant effects on the brain and can cause slow muscle tone and breathing. Alcohol abuse is very common with people who have a Valuim or Xanax addiction. Alcohol increases cortisol which leads to increase stress, especially the next morning. People refer them to the shakes because your body is trying to get rid of the alcohol. An easy way to get rid of the shakes is to take a Benzo with can calm the body. This cycle can be vicious and almost impossible to cure. The first step always is to seek help. You are not alone.

The last topic to be discussed deals with Vicodin. One of the most common medications abused is Vicodin. It is a class III controlled medication which means it produces low-moderate physical dependence, high psychological dependence, and can be used effectively in the United States with a prescription. It is a hydrocodone and tylenol (called Apap short for acetaminophen) based drug and is more readily available to the public compared to Schedule II drugs(CII) like percocet or oxycodone.

My doctor prescribed me vicodin for my toothache? How does the medication know where to go to make the pain stop?

Our brain has receptors in the brain called opioid receptors that regulate pain. When these receptors are activated or inhibited they result in a certain feeling. People always ask how does it know where the pain is? The drugs just block or activate the receptors. They do not know where the pain is. Consequently, side effects do occur with all medications because these receptors are all interconnected with different functions. In this cause the pain receptors are blocked resulting in less pain perceived by the brain.

What are the side effects of Vicodin?

Constipation: Reduces motility of smooth muscle tone in the stomach and

Itching, flushing, red, eyes, sweating: Histamine is released as a result of this drug. (Anti-histamine products (Claritin, Zyrtec-Block histamine)

Common OTC products

Respiratory Depression: When the breathing gets real slow and could lead to death. Hydrocodone is a derivative of codeine, hence, it can cause irregular and periodic breathing problems since it blocks the brain stem (regulates breathing patterns). This becomes a huge problem when alcohol and Vicodin are mixed. Signs of cold and clammy skin, slow heart rate, collapse. CALL 911

Drowsiness, lethargy (tiredness), anxiety, mood swings:

In conclusion, rx abuse continues to be on the rise but we can stop it. By recognizing these withdrawal symptoms and side effects, we can act quickly in seeking help and making this a drug free world.
